Michaud and Aynesworth say Carole – just one of many women drawn to Bundy over the years – was taken in by a nearly impenetrable « mask of sanity » that hides his pathology. That mask « gave him a preternatural power to manipulate, a capacity whose effect was akin to magic. It was this power that made him such an effective killer and so impossible to track down… and he used it to bind women to him. »
